Report from San Bernardino, CA
2002 SPAAMFAA® Winter Convention

Story and Photos By: Wayne Kidd

The warm and sunny skies welcomed the us to "San Berdo" for the 2002 SPAAMFAA
Winter Convention. The ODHFS was represented by Wayne Kidd, Paige Bishop,
Bob Jasinowski and his wife.

Events began with a welcome reception at the hotel Wednesday night. We got to see
many old friends and meet several new ones as well.

Tours on Thursday and Friday were great with something for everyone's taste.
Transportation to local restaurants was provided each evening via antique apparatus,
including a Crown bus that once served LA County Fire. Several photo sessions were
held each night with speakers that held the interest of those in attendance.

Fridays fire camp dinner almost did not happen due to fires in So. California during the week.
However our hosts pulled some strings and made it happen. The food was great (steak and
all the trimmings) as was the apparatus display with some 30 to 40 pieces to look at.

Saturday began overcast and cool but by mid morning had warmed to a beautiful day. The
parade lasted over one and one half hours with everything from two horse drawn steamers
to several new pieces of apparatus. A large number of Crowns in every style and color brought
up the rear of the parade. Following the parade one of the steamers and a horse drawn hose
wagon showed their stuff with a water display.

A flea market on site provided an opportunity to find that item you had been looking for. A fine
dinner buffet Saturday night allowed everyone to get together one last time. For the third year
the ODHFS was recognized for signing the most new SPAAMFAA members. Also, at the officers meeting SPAAMFAA acted on a proposal by Wayne Kidd to list a memorial to members who
pass in future editions of the membership roster. All in all, the people of the area were very
friendly and made us feel welcome during our stay. The host chapter, Crown Firecoach, did
a wonderful job with the entire event. We extended a personal invitation to every one we
spoke with to visit us next year. We have a hard act to follow!
