ODHFS CLAYTOR LAKE MUSTER - 2000 The Third Annual Claytor Lake Muster roared into action on Saturday, June 3rd as the rigs from the ODHFS rolled in. Even though Saturday dawned with the threat of thunderstorms, the weather cleared of f by noon and it turned out to be a beautiful day. About 20 rigs showed up, more were registered but the weather may have kept a few away and at least one fire company had a working fire that morning which kept them away. The State Park was full of action as many events were in progress along with our muster. A car show on the hill above our area was a sight to see as some real beauties rolled in including one of the Morgan McClure, Kodak Winston Cup race Cars. Just adjacent to our sight were radio controlled sea airplanes, some with wing spans of over 5’. Seeing them take off and land on water was interesting. The Western region did a great job of organizing this year’s event! They had refreshments at our tent, provided lunch for all rig owners that participated, had a nice pumping area set up and even held a raffle for a fire truck pedal car. The crowd took great interest in our vehicles and the organizers of the car show presented trophies to the fire trucks as well. It was also a great time to see old friends and socialize, which is really what this is all about anyway! In addition to the rigs that have been there in year’s past, some additional units made an appearance this year. Rick Graham had just purchased an ex Montgomery County Chevy / Oren pumper and utilized the week end to pick it up and show it for the first time. One of our newest members, Dr. John McNamara from Salem, Va., rolled in with his nice C Model Mack pumper. The crew from Hillsville brought a still in service 1972 Ford/Bean pumper that was all original and clean as could be. We also signed up at least six new members during the day, which is what it takes to keep this organization going. Great weather, a beautiful site, wonderful friends and antique fire engines, what more could you ask for! |
