A gift to the Virginia Museum of Transportation celebrates that history.
Built by the Oren Roanoke Corporation in 1952, the truck served as Roanoke City Squad 1 for many years.
Karl Ehlshlager donated the vintage fire engine to the transportation museum Thursday morning.
"I've enjoyed 17 years with the vehicle," Ehlshlager told WDBJ7. "It's one of a kind. It's the only one made of its design, so it's what we called a one-off in the business."
Ehlshlager worked for Roanoke Oren Corporation for about a year, and he purchased the fire engine in 2001.
He says he's glad it's now under cover at the Transportation Museum for everyone to enjoy.
